"Tell Me About Yourself"
If You Dread These Four Words As Much As
Most Actors Do,
Then You Need To Check Out Our
Actor's Schmooze Kit
When you're pursuing a professional acting career, one of the most common things you hear when you're meeting with people is: "Tell me about yourself." You hear it from agents, managers, producers, casting directors, friends, family, enemies, and everyone else in Hollywood. It's a very common question.
And if you're like many of the thousands of Actors I've worked with over the years since 1992 when I started Smart Girls Productions, those four little words rattle every insecurity you've ever felt in your life. The thoughts in your head go something like this:
"What do I say? How much do I tell them? What are they interested in? They don't care about about what I've done. I haven't even done anything. Oh, my gosh, I'm blowing my one career chance right here and now. Great. Just great." Frown.
And then you say something to respond. But whatever you say, later you think about it and you know you could have done better. And then you feel like crap because you don't get that many chances to make a good first impression. Then you might even get depressed for a while before you get back out there and go for it again. Any of this sounding familiar?
If so, don't worry. It's a very common reaction. The great thing is that you can get this whole worrisome issue taken care of for good by checking out what I'm about to tell you about.
You see, I've worked with more than 5000 actors since 1992, and as much as actors have a reputation for talking about themselves, I've personally found that many of them are not really comfortable doing so. In fact, they really hate talking about themselves.
They would much rather be dressed up as their character, in front of the camera, playing a great role on the set of a movie or a TV show than telling an agent or producer what's on their resume.
And my guess is that you, too, would rather be working as an actor than talking about your resume. Am I right?
Yet, at the same time, you probably know that to truly have a career in film and television, you have to be able to sell yourself, to schmooze and network and talk to people in Hollywood. Just as a dentist has to get patients, a personal trainer has to get clients, and a restaurant owner has to get customers, you have to get your own customers, so to speak, which would be the producers who hire you. And how you do that is by getting them to know about you and keeping in touch with them.
(We can help you keep in touch with Agents, Managers, and Casting Directors through Cover Letter Mailings that we create for you, but I'll tell you about those later as you get to know more about Smart Girls Productions.)
The problem is that even before you keep in touch with these people who can make your career, you have to be ready for that first time you meet them. You have to be able to get them interested in you instantly. You have to get them to see you as a real, live human being and not just "another actor trying to make it big." So how do you do it?
There is an art to being able to tell someone about yourself
in a
natural way, that sells them on how fabulous you are,
but doesn't sound like you're bragging.
You have to be able to pitch yourself in this particular way that I have outlined in the materials below. After more than 15 years of working in Hollywood and coaching actors on their careers and preparing them for their meetings, I've identified the most common mistakes that actors make as well as the pitfalls that lead them to nowhere. I've also come up with a system that will help you create your own pitch. Once you have your pitch created, you can modify it to deliver it to anyone, anywhere and naturally bring into the conversation what you are up to without sounding over the top.
To help you do this, I've put together a collection of products that will give you the most important things you need to know to make the most of each and every chance or planned meeting with anyone in the industry. This kit will guide you through various aspects of preparing your pitch and getting ready for your meetings. There's even a guidebook that will tell you what the Agents really mean when they give you their responses. (When you've been around Hollywood for a while, you start to realize that most people in the business don't come right out and say what they mean.) In this segment of "Cracking The Hollywood Code," you will find out not only what they really mean, but also the psychology behind why they don't say what they mean most of the time. Then, instead of being baffled by them saying one thing then doing something different, you can use these insights to your advantage to help you get to the next step in your career .
And there's lots more, too.
Given that your chances at the big break only happen so many times, or at least not as often as you would like, get yourself ready right now.
You can't control when you get your chance, but you can control whether or not you are ready.
Don't take another meeting or go on one more audition wondering what you should say to give it your best shot. With this kit full of tips and tricks, you will be able to walk into any meeting confident that you know exactly who to be, what to say, and how to handle yourself with grace and ease.
